I had an old recessed medicine cabinet that has been driving me crazy for a long time. I wanted to get something nicer but needed the same, or slightly larger, rough opening. This WallBeyond Medicine Cabinet met all my specifications and was the perfect upgrade for my old, cheap cabinet.
I was a little unsure about the rough opening required (this is for the 16x24 inch mirror size) because there are some confusing aspects of the dimensional picture in the product listing. I made a slight gamble that the 20 inch dimension was in the wrong spot on the drawing and was the size of the flange and that the flange was at least half an inch all the way around. When it came in, I confirmed this and to clear it up, the 16x24 inch mirror requires about a 15x19 inch rough opening in the wall to install. The same math can likely be applied to the other sizes as well to determine the correct rough opening sizes.
The cabinet itself is awesome. It is a full aluminum construction and is really good quality. Aluminum is lightweight, easy to clean, and will never rust so it is perfect for a bathroom setting. It has a mirror in the inside back of the cabinet, tempered glass shelves, soft close hinges, and a sturdy mirrored door. The look and construction are better than one I was considering at a pricey modern home furnishing store which was almost three times the price and had a lower quality MDF/laminate interior cabinet versus this one which is glass and aluminum. The mirror is very nice quality and real glass. When I got it installed it made me realize that my old mirror (which was clean) really didn't reflect as clear or as sharp as it could have. I was really impressed right away with the quality of this and couldn't wait to get it installed.
Since I was installing in the wall, I did not evaluate the surface mount installation, but it came with a lot of extra hardware and side mirrors to do the install and make it look nice and finished, so I imagine it would be similar.
In my case I removed the old cabinet and had to slightly increase the opening. The prep work took the majority of the amount of time to install this. I had to reframe the opening first then do a little touch up mudding and painting once I got the RO correct. If you're installing in a new bathroom you can build the RO right in with your other work and it would be minimal added effort. Once all the prep work was done, the cabinet slid right in and takes four screws, two on each side of the inside frame to tighten it up and hold it in place. Very easy install once the opening is prepped. I shimmed it off the wall a bit using a black gasket material so the door wouldn't interfere with my tile splash, and it really was very easy overall.
If I had to complain about anything, I am not the biggest fan of soft close hinges and these have a very strong soft close mechanism. But that's more of a personal preference and if I can find a compatible hinge I may swap them out for self closing (snaps closed tightly rather than slowly closing) or free swing and use a magnet closure. Other than that, I really have zero complaints.
Overall I would recommend this in a heartbeat. It was everything I was looking for and the value for this one was significantly better than others I had looked at for a better cabinet. I use this every day and am happy I got this every time I open it up and see how much nicer this is than what I replaced. Highly recommended!
